Whitefish Lake – Campsite #2

As I paddled up to this campsite I noticed the obvious rocky shoreline canoe landing, but I couldn’t locate the orange marker. Sometimes the orange marker gets blown off, so I didn’t rule it out just yet. When I was able to spot the rocky ring of the fire pit, I knew I was in the right spot and I pulled up to shore. After some walking around and investigating I had my suspicions that this campsite was no longer in use. The fire pit was no longer a fire pit, it was just the ring of rocks. There was also a cottage, or some very large heavy-use facility, about 100m away, within very easy walking distance. What sealed the deal, literally, was that the thunder box opening was filled up. Plus, the path to get to the thunder box was overgrown. I did find it weird that the thunder box itself was still there; usually when they are filled up, the box itself gets destroyed. Anyways, this campsite was clearly no longer a campsite. I noticed afterwards that the island just south of the campsite had two sites on it, despite only one being marked on the map I was using. At some point, the park must have closed this campsite, and added an additional campsite to the island. If you are camping on Whitefish Lake, please do not camp here.

UPDATE: In 2023 a sign was added near the shore indicating that this area is part of the pow-wow site.
