Tom Thomson Lake – Campsite #1
If you’re coming from Canoe Lake, this is the first campsite you’ll pass on Tom Thomson. Unfortunately, it’s not a very impressive campsite. It has a nice rocky shoreline but it may be hard to enjoy the shoreline with all the traffic passing by since the campsite is right in the narrows. The interior of the site is elevated and doesn’t have many flat areas. I found three tent spots; one was ok but the other two weren’t very great. You’d still be able to pitch your tents without a problem, they’re just not large flat beautiful sleep-in-past-the-alarm type of spots. The fire pit is also just ok and it doesn’t have too much seating around it. Overall I didn’t think this campsite was anything special. It just didn’t appeal to me personally, and if I ever camped on Tom Thomson I would continue paddling towards another site. If you’re coming from Canoe Lake and this is the first site you see, there’s still so much more of the lake to explore. If you’re coming from the other direction and this is the last campsite available, sure, take it. You may not come home and tell all your friends about the site, but it will get the job done.
