Joe Lake Western Narrows – Campsite #12
Unlike most sites on the western shore of Joe Lake, I actually somewhat liked this campsite. But it has its pros and cons. I definitely don’t like that it’s across the lake from Camp Arowhon; it’s not the sight I want to look at in the backcountry, and any noise from the camp would easily be heard while staying at this campsite. But that’s the only thing I really disliked. Now for the good. There are a handful of different canoe landing options; none were very good in high water levels but they all look like they would be perfect when water levels are lower/more normal. The campsite is on a very skinny peninsula, almost making it feel like an island. I found two tent spots inland and a third patch of flat ground directly at the front tip of the peninsula, which would only be an option in good weather. The highlight of the campsite is the fire pit, it’s cool and adds character to the site. I also really like that since it has that island feel to it, you’re always aware of your surroundings. The campsite checks off a lot of things that I look for, I just really dislike its location within the park. If it was somewhere deeper in the backcountry and not directly across from a camp, I’d be much more inclined to camp here.
