Achray Campground in Algonquin Park

Achray Campground is located at the far east side of Algonquin Park. There’s an approximate 50km gravel road leading into the campground, which is in good condition with very little loose gravel for most of the way. Finding Achray Campground may be confusing for some people, since Google Maps tends to provide directions through logging roads that aren’t actually available for public use. To clear any confusion, Algonquin Park has provided specific directions on the Achray Campground page of their website. The latitude and longitude coordinates of Achray Campground are 45.867255°, -77.757028°.

Achray Campground is one of the smaller campgrounds in Algonquin Park, with only 45 campsites. It doesn’t have any electrical sites, but it does have dog-free sites and radio-free sites. There are flush toilets, however there are no showers or laundry service. Motor boat access is allowed and there is also a beautiful beachfront for campers to enjoy; the best campground beach in the park, in my opinion! Achray Campground is a great choice for people coming from eastern Ontario regions like Ottawa, or even out-of-province visitors from Quebec. There are also a number of attractions nearby like High Falls and the Barron Canyon.

In 2025, the Achray Campground will operate between April 25th to October 26th.

There are also a number of attractions nearby like High Falls and the Barron Canyon.

In 2025, the Achray Campground will operate between April 25th to October 26th.

There are lots of great campsites at Achray Campground. In my opinion, the campsites tend to have the most ‘character’ relative to other campgrounds in Algonquin Park. There are some desirable, interior sites like Site #39 and Site #40, but the majority of the campsites are located near the shoreline and have water access.

My favourite sites at Achray Campground would probably be Site #17 and Site #18 if you travel with a four-legged friend, or Site #20, Site #23, and Site #25 if you are ok with staying in the Dog-Free Zone. Site #43, Site #44, and Site #45 are also great options if you need more space (they are massive campsites), and they do have water access, though not at the beautiful sandy campground beach.

Achray Campground only has non-electrical campsites, so all of the campsites throughout the campground have the same per-night fee, with a few exceptions. The per-night fee for most campsites at Achray Campground is $46.05, with a few sites having a fee of $50.85. This fee is inclusive of tax. One vehicle permit is included in the price of the campsite fee. For additional vehicles, the price is $14.13, per vehicle, per night.

In addition, there is a non-refundable reservation fee when making your booking. If you book over the phone, the fee is $13.00, and if you book online, the fee is $11.00. If you need to modify or cancel your booking, there is a minimum fee of $10.50 when modifying/cancelling over the phone, or $8.50 when modifying/cancelling online. The above prices are inclusive of tax.

Achray Campground is a popular destination because of the various activities that can be done directly at the campground, as well as the nearby surrounding areas. You can access the Eastern Pines Backpacking Trail, the Berm Lake Trail, and the Jack Pine Trail directly from the campground. The Achray Campground, along with Grand Lake (the lake that the campground is located) has tons of history to explore. If you wanted to paddle Grand Lake or venture into the backcountry, canoe rentals are easy to coordinate through Algonquin Portage or Algonquin Bound Outfitters, both of which are located on Barron Canyon Road (the road that leads towards the campground). You can check out this article “A Complete Guide to Renting Canoes in Algonquin Park” to learn more.

Not too far away from the campground are some more popular attractions, like the Barron Canyon and the Barron Canyon Trail. High Falls and the High Falls waterslide are also very popular nearby destinations. Although Grand Lake is the main backcountry access point in the area, Brigham Lake and Squirrel Rapids provide additional access to the backcountry, letting you start your trip closer to some of these aforementioned attractions.

Of course, if you just wanted to stay at the campground, that’s also an option. You can walk through the campground, attend an event at the Achray Theatre, and spend time at the gorgeous soft-sand campground beach to enjoy the views over Grand Lake.

For more information, visit the Achray Campground page on the Algonquin Park website.
